Biophysics
Biological physics is a multidisciplinary science that study systems of a biological nature by methods of Physics. The scope of research ranging from the scale of biological molecules to smart healthcare. SMART HEALTHCARE (eHealth) is one of the main goals to develop for National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Combining personal physiological data analysis with AI operation facilitates a new generation of smart healthcare. Bio-inspired materials also provide a opportunity to foster new type of electronic devices, Physical mechanisms, and applications. Prof. S. Long Hsu develops new measures to quantify the complexity and the disorder of a physiological data based on Physics. The new measures in turn can serve as the new features for AI operation to extract from the big physiological data in differentiating the healthy from the diseased with high accuracy. The study has been validated on the classification of ECG and gait stability. The future work is on the early warning of myocardial anoxia. Prof. Yung-Fu Chen, Prof. Atsushi Yabushita, and Prof. Kaun-Wei Su work together to develop original ultrashort pulse lasers (for visible and near ultraviolet) and fastscan femtosecond spectroscopy systems for study of photo-fragile materials like proteins. These original systems are now used to elucidate primary reaction mechanisms of various proteins including light-sensor proteins (rhodopsin, bacteriorhodopsin, etc) and heme proteins (cytochrome c, hemeglobin, etc). Prof. Wen-Bin Jain collaborates with Yu-Chang Chen to develop new types of electronic devices and Physical mechanism inspired by DNA molecule, a natural made nanowire. They have found that DNA chelated with nickel ions behaves like a multi-functioning memristor and memcapacitor (resistor and capacitor with memory effects) device. They also discover new type of dynamic Seebeck effect learned from life. In the future, they attempt to develop neural network based on DNA for applications of memcomputing, mimicking the functioning of human brain.
